The Challenge We Face
When you use Google Translate for Gĩkũyũ today, you get robotic, awkward translations that miss the soul of our language. This isn't just a technical problem - it's a cultural crisis.
Why Current AI Fails Gĩkũyũ
Wrong Learning Approach
Current AI learns English first, then tries to map Gĩkũyũ words to English patterns. This is backwards! A child learns their mother tongue first, not through translation.
Insufficient Training Data
African languages represent less than 1% of AI training data. Gĩkũyũ, despite 7+ million speakers, is severely underrepresented in machine learning datasets.
Lost Cultural Context
Proverbs like "Gũtirĩ mũrũngarũ ũtarĩ mũmbi" lose their deeper meaning when translated robotically without understanding cultural wisdom.
Critical Language Features Ignored
The difference between ũ and u, or ĩ and i completely changes word meanings. Current systems often miss these crucial distinctions.

We're building that library digitally - preserving the wisdom, stories, and linguistic patterns of Gĩkũyũ in a way that future generations can access and learn from.
Our Three-Phase Approach
We use "curriculum learning" - teaching the AI in stages, just like how humans learn languages naturally.
Teaching Pure Gĩkũyũ (The Soul)
Goal: Train the AI on pure Gĩkũyũ text with NO English. The model learns to "think" in Gĩkũyũ first - understanding syntax, cultural logic, and authentic patterns.
Materials: Traditional stories (ng'ano), proverbs with explanations, elder speeches, radio broadcasts, historical texts.
Target: 50MB of high-quality pure Gĩkũyũ text
Success Test: AI can complete a Gĩkũyũ story in authentic voice, maintaining cultural tone and wisdom.
Building the Translation Capability (The Mind)
Goal: Once the AI understands Gĩkũyũ deeply, we teach it to translate while maintaining that cultural understanding.
Materials: Bilingual texts (Bible, Constitution), dictionaries, glossaries, teaching materials, legal documents.
Target: 20MB of high-quality parallel translations
Success Test: AI translates accurately while preserving cultural context and can explain WHY translations mean what they do.
Adding Speech Capabilities (The Senses)
Goal: Complete the Digital Elder with speech recognition and natural voice generation.
Materials: Audio recordings aligned with text, capturing tonal patterns and proper pronunciation.
Outcome: A Digital Elder you can speak with, hear from, and learn from naturally.

The Team
Project Lead: Afya (Moses Ndiritu)
Background: Medical doctor by profession, native Gĩkũyũ speaker, and passionate language preservationist. Self-taught in AI and machine learning specifically to build this project.
Role: Technical architecture, data processing, AI training, project coordination.
Motivation: "I want my children and grandchildren to have tools to connect with their heritage. Current AI doesn't serve our language - we're changing that."
Community Contributors
Who: 5-15 volunteer collaborators sharing Gĩkũyũ materials, verifying quality, and spreading the word.
Role: Data collection, quality verification, cultural validation, community outreach.
